The International Association of Consumer Law grew from a series of successful conferences on consumer law held in Latin America by Antonio Benjamin, now a Justice of the Supreme Court of Brazil. Antonio was influential in the development of consumer law in Brazil and also in the rest of Latin America. The idea of a formal Association was raised in 1995 at our conference in Toronto and a committee composed of Iain Ramsay (Toronto,Canada), Sothi Rachagan (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Thierry Bourgoignie (Louvain-la-Neuve,Belgium) and Antonio Benjamin (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finalized the structure of the Association at the conference in Kuala Lumpur in 1997. The Association was formally constituted in Belgium with Thierry Bourgoignie as the first president.

The objects of the Association are to encourage legal education and scientific research and to share information on an international level in the study of consumer law and policy, including the exchange of research findings and the organization of seminars.

As the site of the presidency changes together with the person of the president it is difficult to fulfill the requirements of a national registration. Thus, the Association works as an unregistered international organization, without property of its own and administered through local organizations.

L’association internationale de droit de la consommation est le résultat d’une série de conférences organisées en Amérique latine par M. Antonio Benjamin, un des juges de la Cour Suprême du Brésil. M. Benjamin a été instrumental dans le développement du droit de la consommation au Brésil et dans le reste de l’Amérique latine. L’idée d’une association a germé en 1995 pendant la conférence de Toronto. Un comité compose d’Iain Ramsay (Toronto,Canada), Sothi Rachagan (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Thierry Bourgoignie (Louvain-la-Neuve,Belgium) and Antonio Benjamin (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finalisa la structure de l’association à la conférence de Kuala Lumpur en 1997. L’association fut enregistrée en Belgique avec M. Bourgoignie comme premier président.

Les buts de l’association sont d’encourager l’éducation juridique et la recherche scientifique et de partager, à un niveau international, sur l’étude du droit de la consommation. Cela inclus l’échange des résultats de recherché et l’organisation de séminaires et conférences.
